State urges caution on ice fishing

PALMER -- The Alaska State Parks and the Department of Fish and Game are warning anglers and other winter recreationists to stay off thin ice atop lakes in the Matanuska and Susitna valleys.

Some aren't even completely ice-covered yet.

"Remember," said public information officer Ken Marsh, "catching a few early winter fish is not worth the risk."

Some Mat-Su lakes have 1-2 inches of ice; others have 3-4 inches.

Typically, at least 6 inches of ice is needed for ice to be safe for foot traffic -- and 18 inches for vehicles. Once ice is that thick, Marsh recommends taking a spud bar and frequently checking the ice thickness.
