WASILLA -- When John D. Collins' neighbors saw flames in the kitchen and a car in the driveway of his Meadow Lakes home Sunday, they feared the worst and tried to come to the rescue, said Mat-Su Borough spokeswoman Patty Sullivan. Luckily Collins wasn't actually home. He'd gone to church and then shopping with friends, according to firefighters. But the fire, reported at roughly 3:15 p.m., caused an estimated $125,000 to Collins' log home on the 9400 block of West Corcoran Way, Sullivan said.
"He was safe. Unfortunately, his house is a total loss."
The cause of the fire was unknown Sunday night, Sullivan said.
