Cement arrives at Port MacKenzie from China

The Clipper Grace, a bulk carrier vessel from Nanjing, China, was docked at Port MacKenzie in Mat-Su last week, offloading 15,000 metric tons of cement for NPI LLC. NPI manager Ron Arvin said offloading the vessel took three days of round-the-clock work. Sacks of cement, each holding 1.5 metric tons, were lifted 12 at a time by cranes onto waiting trailers at the borough's deep-water dock. The off-loading went smoothly despite a low tide one day that left the dock towering above the deck of the ship. Six hours later, the tide had risen about 34 feet and the deck of the ship was floating above the dock.

NPI sells the cement to Klondike Concrete for use in construction projects, including Goose Bay Correctional Center, the state prison being built just up Point MacKenzie Road from the port.

The Clipper Grace is the second ship to dock at the borough's port this year. This shipment is expected to generate $35,000 for the Mat-Su Borough.
