Emmonak man seeks food airlift to combat economic crisis (The Bristol Bay Times): A combination of extreme cold and high fuel prices has created a humanitarian crisis for the village of Emmonak, according to resident Nicholas Tucker. In an open letter, he describes residents' dire circumstances and calls for a food airlift and cash influx.

In a league of her own, Palin swings away (Clyde Haberman, The New York Times): A modern film version of "The Women," Clare Boothe Luce's 1936 play about class distinctions and resentments, came and went in New York a few months ago, leaving a trail of unflattering newspaper reviews. Now we have a real-life update involving some of the city's most prominent women: Caroline Kennedy, Katie Couric and Tina Fey. A central role is played by an outlander named Sarah Palin. Somehow, we suspect that the critics would be equally underwhelmed. SEE ALSO:

Palin strikes back: 5 new quotes (Esquire): "Yesterday the Anchorage Daily News, they called again to ask - double-, triple-, quadruple-check - who is Trig's real mom. And I said, come on, are you kidding me? We're gonna answer this? Do you not believe me or my doctor? And they said, no, it's been quite cryptic the way that my son's birth has been discussed. And I thought, OK, more indication of continued problems in the world of journalism." SEE ALSO:

> Palin misremembers media's role in Trig story (Media Matters): The simple fact is the mainstream media did not spread the pregnancy story. Nor, contrary to Palin's accusation, were liberal bloggers responsible for it.

Bored with the Barracuda (Own the Sidewalk blog): Attention, Internet: I am officially over Sarah Palin. Seriously. I'm beyond bored. I have reached Sarah Saturation. Don't expect to see any new Palin-related posts for a while, unless one of the following events occurs.

Sustainable-guitar movement out to save Alaska trees (emagazine.com): Sitka spruce from Southeast Alaska is valued by guitar manufacturers for its exceptional tonal properties. Guitar makers Taylor, Gibson, Fender, Martin and Yamaha have banded together with Greenpeace to encourage sustainable logging practices in old-growth forests.

Murkowski grills Chu in Senate confirmation hearing (The Associated Press): Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Chu promised today that if confirmed as energy secretary he will aggressively pursue policies aimed at addressing climate change and achieving greater energy independence by developing clean energy sources. Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee's ranking Republicans, called Chu well-qualified but pressed him on his position on offshore oil development and nuclear energy. Waiting on the wind (Anchorage Press): Fritz Reinbold wants to put a windmill on the lawn to generate electricity for his home. He's already invested more than $2,000 in the project, he says, but so far he's been stymied because Anchorage land-use codes lack any mention of windmills. The bureaucrats who could approve the project won't issue a permit, and won't deny one either.

Dog owners learn tips for keeping pets safe during trapping season (Peninsula Clarion): As a trapper and dog owner, Larry Lewis of Fish and Game stressed the responsibilities of both parties to prevent dogs from getting caught in a trap. Lewis led a class for dog owners in Soldotna.

1943 Southeast plane crash a tale of courage and survival (Idaho Statesman): Sixty-six years ago this month, a Lockheed Electra crashed on a snowy mountainside in Alaska. Its pilot, Charles Gillam, died trying to get help for his five passengers. One passenger died from injuries suffered in the crash. The other four - in an epic tale of beating the odds - survived.
