Feb. 24: Anchorage brave in face of volcano; defending villages; snow hides yard stuff; moose hunt an inch from legal; trouble for Canadian caribou; tide power for Juneau?

Today's News for the Last Frontier

POLL: VOLCANO DOESN'T SCARE ANCHORAGE RESIDENTS (Dittman Research, The Alaska Standard): Anchorage residents aren't much worried about the possibility of an eruption of the Mount Redoubt volcano, but two-thirds say they have taken precautions just in case. ALSO:

> Dear Mount Redoubt: Get it over with, please (Alaska Dispatch)

> Scientists get closer view of Redoubt (Anchorage Daily News)

WE'RE ASKING THE WRONG QUESTION ABOUT VILLAGES (Fiery Blazing Handbasket blog): "Forget about whether the state of Alaska should continue to support the existence of villages. The villages ought to be asking themselves why they should continue to support urban, suburban and wilderburban Alaska. Truth is, urban Alaska is dependent on the continued existence of Alaska's villages."

QUESTIONS SURROUND ALASKAN'S DEATH IN NEW ZEALAND (Otago Daily Times): The body of Sean Francis Lawson, 20, was found by a tourist near a river mouth in Kakanui, New Zealand. He'd been missing since Sunday, and police are trying to learn what he'd been doing until then. With photo.

PHOTOS: TOK NEWBIE WONDERS WHAT ELSE IS BURIED UNDER SNOW (Living in Tok blog): "That's not a junkyard, but someone's yard with a mind-boggling amount of stuff half-buried in the snow. I can't wait until the thaw."

ALASKA MOOSE HUNT AN INCH SHORT OF PERFECT (Wahpeton Daily News, N.D.): "I drew my bow and made the best shot of my life, hitting exactly where I was aiming. The bull ran 60 yards and tipped over within view. I was ecstatic! I'd just killed my first moose and he was a magnificent animal. Dwight and I engaged in the customary backslapping, then walked over to look at my bull. I had a cord in my pack with two knots 50 inches apart so I dug it out and stretched it across the antlers. They were one inch short!"

CARIBOU VANISHING FROM CANADIAN TUNDRA (Winnipeg Free Press): Of Canada's two great herds of barren-land caribou, one has almost vanished and the second is at risk. Some blame climate change, some blame hunting and predation, some say it's a natural cycle and some blame resource development. But unlike in Alaska, calving grounds aren't protected by a wildlife refuge, and there's a uranium rush going on. ALSO:

> Canadian polar bear round-table meeting disappoints scientists (Edmonton Journal)

TURBINE TECHNOLOGY GENERATES WAVES IN JUNEAU (Juneau Empire): The New York-based Electric Power Research Institute says the Gastineau Channel at Juneau might be a perfect place to test tidal energy. It's close to the power grid, and being in a state capital would bring the project lots of publicity.

GAY COMMUNITY IN ALASKA? (The Northern Vox blog): A gay resident of a small Southeast community wonders about gay life elsewhere in the state and sparks a conversation.
