News for Thursday, June 21

Missing link. Canada’s CBC News reports that a railway linking Alaska to the Lower 48 would cost $10.5 billion. Then it would lose money.

That’s according to a recent feasibility study of a 2,000-kilometer railroad project that would connect Alaska, the Yukon and ports in Northern British Columbia to the North American railroad system, CBC reports.

Here’s the key sentence for Alaska:

Such a line would recover only 75 per cent of construction costs over 50 years of running at capacity, leaving the Yukon and Alaska governments on the hook for nearly $3 billion to pay the difference.

Gov. Sarah Palin has said this rail link isn’t a priority for her, according to the story. CBC says the Alaska and Yukon governments shared the $4.7 million cost of the study.

You know you’re from Southeast, Alaska, if:

-- You don’t think Anchorage is “real Alaska” … because it’s not
-- You have taken a float plane or a commercial fishing vessel for a school trip
-- You get bored and go porcupine hunting

Ahh … summertime. Look for news outlets to provide fire updates throughout the day, but as of this morning:

> The Frontiersman reports that lightning started multiple Susitna Valley wildfires – with one starting about 9:30 last night and reportedly burning hundreds of acres near Trapper Lake.

> There’s a giant fire on the Kenai Peninsula -- 4,000 acres burned, as of last night -- according to ADN, the Homer Tribune, KTVA, KTUU. It’s about 30 miles north of Homer.

> Morris News Service (via the Homer News) and the Homer Tribune report on a roughly 15-acre fire south of Anchor Point, about a mile east of the Sterling Highway.

No ‘Matlock’? No ‘Murder She Wrote’? In Juneau, the Empire reports some TV viewers are losing the Hallmark Channel.

Sen. Ted Stevens, whose had a rough publicity month, can’t catch a break as he’s knocked for this too:

“I think it’s embarrassing, quite frankly, for Sen. (Ted) Stevens. He’s been one of United States Congress’ most vocal spokesman about having wholesome family programs out there and available,” said Hallmark Channel CEO Henry Schleiff said, according to the Empire.

Microphones in the basement. KTUU reports on next week’s special Legislative session in Anchorage, with House Speaker John Harris saying he hopes to see it last only one day. The session is planned as a bare bones gathering at the Egan Center, the station reports.

Legislators will tackle funding for low-income seniors, but there’s lingering tension over whether the session could have been prevented with a senior-funding solution during the regular session.

The Alaska Star asks readers: “What’s the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever bought?”

Answer: “100 pounds of beef from a street vendor,” says Eagle River resident Cari Witte.
