Wishing a ski vacation

A candidate for the silliest ski ad ever, this video is borderline nonsensical and definitely lightweight. But it's short, and it might give you a chuckle. (youtube.com)

"Power to the people"

First, there was the rock video. And now, Mike Gravel, former senator from Alaska and long-shot presidential candidate, has done it again: He's come up with a sometimes puzzling, often likable, always colorful video for the Internet. (youtube.com)

Nowak: No diapers?

Story tools

But what will Jay Leno joke about?  Everyone loves the story of the diaper-wearing astronaut Lisa Nowak driving to confront her romantic rival in a love triangle with a former Alaskan. But Nowak’s lawyer says the diaper thing is baloney, according to The Associated Press:

"The biggest lie in this preposterous tale that has been told is that my client drove from Houston, Texas, to Orlando, Florida, nonstop, wearing a diaper," Donald Lykkebak said after filing motions to suppress evidence in Nowak's criminal case. "That is an absolute fabrication."

The lawyer said the diapers in the car were toddler-sized and several years old, bought when her family was evacuated during a hurricane.

Lights out. According to the Juneau Empire, a Southeast utility says Angoon’s city government wasn’t paying its bills and, as a result, lost power Tuesday.

It seems that households in the village still had electricity, but the water treatment plant didn’t, leading to a run on bottled water at the local store. The paper writes that the shutdown stalled the water treatment facility, paralyzed the fire department and left the residents without cable TV.

The utility says it’s the first time Angoon has been disconnected, but not necessarily the first time the city was late on its bills.

Mayor Walter Jack told the paper that the village needs jobs so people can afford to pay the city, but wouldn’t say why the bills went unpaid. Power returned Thursday, the Empire writes.

Yet another use for duct tape. The Valdez Star tells the story of a crewman trying to strangle his captain – and apparently stabbing him with a marlin pick – only to be pulled away and duct-taped for the eight-hour trip back to port.

The crewman has been charged with attempted murder, the paper reports.

Immigration debate. The News-Miner writes why Alaska’s two senators helped defeat – for now – an immigration reform bill backed by President Bush.

The bill would have offered amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, the News-Miner writes, but this week’s Senate vote means it isn’t likely to come up again anytime soon.

Eagle town. ABC News visited Homer for a story on bald eagles being removed from the endangered species list. The piece focused on town’s 82-year-old “eagle lady” and the novelty of Homer’s abundant birds. The real appeal was all the eagle footage, but it looks like there’s no video link on the Web site.

What’s it mean for customers?

Where to meet. The Voice of the Times reflects on the Legislature convening this week in Anchorage:

The special session provided proof of a very special fact. The time is rapidly coming when the Legislature, as a matter of course, should be meeting in Anchorage — and on occasion, for sure, in Fairbanks, too.

Home Depot opens in Juneau.

The Empire reports: Contrary to rumor, the Juneau store is not the retail chain's smallest, said spokeswoman Kathryn Gallagher. That honor belongs to the Alamo, Calif., store at 34,000 square feet.

‘Yeah, he’s got problems.’ The Frontiersman writes that a Wasilla man who police say left his 6-week-old baby in an unlocked car while he shoplifted drugs now faces a reckless abandonment charge.

“Yeah, he’s got problems,” Wasilla Police officer Doug Sonerholm told the paper. “But in my way of thinking, that doesn't relieve him of any of his responsibilities.”

The dog rescuer. KTVA, KTUU and ADN report that a man who tried to save his dog from a duplex fire in Anchorage had to be handcuffed by police.

“He ran in through the firefighters and they had to stop him at the door. But he was taken into custody, because they did not want him to return to the building,” deputy fire chief Bridget Bushue told the station.

ADN reports that the dog, named King, had been locked in a kennel but that firefighters brought him to safety uninjured.

KTVA reports that the man was “pulled from a burning building,” while the ADN story says he was not home when the fire started.

Check the bottom of the KTUU story for a picture of the dog.
