Projections might paint a bleak picture for this summer’s tourist trade, but officials with the Alaska Marine Highway System don’t expect much of a downturn in those using state ferries.
Department of Transportation spokesman Roger Wetherell says projected revenue and vehicle traffic shouldn’t lag much behind last year’s numbers. Alaskans account for about 70 percent of the ridership on the 11 state ferries.
The big question is how many from outside the state will book passage on the ferries this summer.
