Big beards vie for title of Mr. Sourdough at the state fair

Doug Renfro with the beard he said took him one year and four days to grow. Renfro was the overall winner of the 2011 Alaska State Fair Great Alaska Beard Contest.

The competition was, uh, fur-ious at the Alaska State Fair's Great Alaska Beard Contest on Sunday afternoon.

Growers take the art of growing pumpkins to the very edge

J.D. Megchelsen of Nikiski shows off his Atlantic Giant pumpkin named Lucy Lu that set a state record of 1,287 pounds during a weigh-off at the Alaska State Fair.

Before hauling his record-breaking pumpkin to the state fair in Palmer, J.D. Megchelsen tucked in the giant squash between 8:30 and 9 most evenings.

What bloodthirsty corsairs have to do with the 75th anniversary of the Alaska State Fair is anyone's guess. But Pirates for Hire is proving to be a popular draw among this year's attractions.

Behemoth state fair cabbage falls just shy of record

Steve Hubacek delivers his 1st prize winning cabbage to the Alaska State Fair on Friday afternoon. The 126.4 pound giant fell just short of breaking the world record, 127 pounds set by another cabbage grown by Hubacek in 2009.

The crowd packed into the bleachers at the Farm Exhibits building at the Alaska State Fair anticipated a new world record cabbage Friday night. They watched the parade of 28 green giants dragged to the scale. At the end of the Giant Cabbage Weigh-Off, Steve Hubacek of Wasilla still held the title as the grower of the biggest cabbage ever -- but not with this year's entry.

Charlie Daniels puts on energetic show

Charlie Daniels

After 53 years of performing and recording, this wasn't Charlie Daniels' first rodeo, nor was this even his first Alaska State Fair. The Charlie Daniels Band graced the Borealis stage in 2007, and Tuesday evening the audience was once again packed with a crowd of long-haired countryboy sympathizers.

Pumpkin wins state record after bigger one is disqualified

"Lucy Lu," a 1,287-pound pumpkin grown by John J.D. Megchelsen of Nikiski, took the title for biggest pumpkin ever grown in Alaska on Wednesday after a 1,723-pounder grown by Dale Marshall of Anchorage was disqualified because of a hole in the bottom.

There's something new at this year's fair, a bazaar of sorts, featuring several notable Alaska Native artists and craftsmen at their work. While individual Native artists have had their own booths in the past, this is the first time we've seen a collection like this.

Scooter Hackett earned the title of All Around Cowboy at the 2011 Alaska State Fair Rodeo, held Aug. 27-28. Hackett tied with his brother Kenny, each receiving 80 points. The tie was broken based on the amount of money won by each cowboy.

Dale Marshall of Anchorage is dwarfed by an Atlantic Giant Pumpkin that he estimates to be around 1,780 pounds on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011. The giant fruit was started by seed on April 1 and has a 202-inch circumference. Marshall plans to enter the pumpkin in the Alaska State Fair during the weigh-in on Wednesday. Marshall holds the state record with a 1,101-pound pumpkin that he entered in the state fair last year.

Dale Marshall started a pumpkin plant in his Anchorage greenhouse on April 1. Five months later, he is looking to break the Alaska and world records for pumpkin size in judging at the Alaska State Fair.

Alaska fans tough it out for fair rodeo

The stands were full at the start of the Alaska State Fair Rodeo on Saturday. That's not unusual, said Charlie Willis, who runs the event. The fair has long hosted the state's biggest annual rodeo.

Vendors in the log cabin concession booths along the Green Trail at the Alaska State Fair are wondering whether next year will be the last for the booths. The state fire marshal has ordered "significant infrastructure investments" to bring the buildings up to code.

The "Outback in Alaska" show at the Alaska State Fair was late in opening on Thursday. The troupe of kangaroos, pelicans and an emu was stopped by Canadian customs when the presenters tried to drive the animals from Las Vegas to Alaska.

How to save on state fair admission

The Alaska State Fair opens at noon Thursday. Weekday admission this year is $11 for adults, $7 for youth age 6-12 and seniors age 65 and over. Admission on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays will be $13 for adults and $8 for youth or seniors, but several discount opportunities are available.
