KOTZEBUE -- Alaska State Troopers were notified early Friday that 24-year-old Carl Thomas was overdue on a snowmachine trip from Kotzebue to his home in Deering.
Thomas had picked up a new Arctic Cat snowmachine in Kotzebue and was headed home. Volunteers from Deering went out to look for him about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, troopers said. They could see a light northeast of Elephant Point, about 25 miles from Buckland, but were low on gas and had to return to Deering.
Troopers in Kotzebue were notified and asked the Buckland search and rescue team to look for Thomas, and searchers from Deering also returned to help.
About 12:30 p.m. Saturday, the Buckland searchers found Thomas at a shelter cabin across the bay from Elephant Point. He had lost the trail because of blowing snow and run out of gas.
The searchers provided more gas and escorted Thomas back to Deering.
A planned Rescue Coordination Center aerial search was canceled.
