LOCATION: On the west shore of Six Mile Lake, between Lake Clark and Iliamna Lake, 190 air miles southwest of Anchorage.
DESCRIPTION: A Tanaina Indian (Athabascan and Iliamna) village with a fishing and subsistence lifestyle; salmon, trout, grayling, moose, caribou, bear, dall sheep, rabbit and porcupine are harvested. Fishing in Bristol Bay is an important source of income, and about 15 residents hold commercial permits. Many families travel to summer fish camps. Gold and copper are mined in the area. One source of summer work is firefighting. However, unemployment is high. During the 2000 U.S. census, 47 residents were employed and 68 percent were out of the work force.
