A report of gunfire in Fairview on Monday afternoon caused Fairview Elementary School to temporarily go into stay-put mode, according to Anchorage police.
A caller reported an adult male opening fire, possibly on a vehicle, near the corner of Ninth Avenue and Medfra Street at about 1:10 p.m., police Lt. Paul Honeman said. The reported shooting took place outside of a gray apartment complex, which the suspect apparently entered at first, he said. The man then began walking south on Medfra -- toward the school, the caller told police.
Police alerted the school and the Fairview Recreation Center, Honeman said, and the school went into stay-put mode -- in which the school's doors are locked but students continue their normal activities -- as a precautionary measure.
Officers searching the area found some bullet fragments on the road, though no damage or injuries were reported, Honeman said.
A man wanted on a felony warrant whom police arrested in the area following the shooting turned out not to be the suspect, but police received tips that may lead to an arrest, he said.
