LOCATION: Along Kalifornsky Beach Road, off the Sterling Highway, 10 miles south of the City of Kenai, on the east shore of Cook Inlet.
DESCRIPTION: A geographic location on the Kenai Peninsula. More than 92 percent of the residents are non-Native. Kalifornsky Beach Road is well-traveled by Kenai River sportfishing enthusiasts. The economy of the area is diverse, with oil and gas processing, timber, commercial and sportfishing, government, retail businesses and tourism-related services providing employment. There is one school, attended by about 440 students.
HISTORY: The village of Kalifonsky was first noted in 1916 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. "Kali" means fishermen. The family name "Kalifornsky" is attributed to a Dena'ina Indian who worked at the Fort Ross colony in California between 1812 and the 1820s.
