BUTTE
POPULATION: 3,166 (2006)
LOCATION: South of Palmer in the Mat-Su Borough, off the Old Glenn Highway and at the foot of Bodenberg Butte.
DESCRIPTION: A large suburban area outside Palmer. Most residents work in the Palmer-Wasilla area or in Anchorage. Farming and wholesale distribution of farm products is the main industry. There is one school, attended by about 300 students, but middle and high school students are bused to Palmer. The April 2000 U.S. census found that 1,115 residents were employed, median household income was $55,573 and nearly 1 of every 10 residents was living below the official U.S. poverty level.
HISTORY: Athabascan Dena'ina Indians traveled through the Butte area on a winter trail from Eklutna to the Copper River. A large Dena'ina village called Hutnaynut'l, or "burnt over," existed in the Bodenburg area. The first farm was homesteaded in 1917 by John Bodenburg.
