LOCATION: Adjacent to and southwest of Palmer, off the Glenn Highway, and accessed by the Trunk Road and the Palmer-Wasilla Highway.
DESCRIPTION: A relatively large settlement of over 1,100 homes. The economy is based on a diversity of retail and other services and city, borough, state and federal government employment. Many residents are employed in Palmer, Wasilla or Anchorage. There is one school, attended by about 415 students.
HISTORY: The Matanuska and Susitna valleys were settled by many homesteaders as part of an experiment during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Agricultural crops and natural resources sustained development. Low housing costs, the semi-rural lifestyle and a 45-minute commute to Anchorage have supported growth.
