It's catch-and-release this season.
Urban anglers fishing Campbell or Chester creeks cannot keep rainbow or steelhead trout this season, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced Tuesday.
The usual stocking of both waterways has dwindled in recent years. This is the second consecutive year neither creek was stocked due to disease concerns at the Elmendorf fish hatchery. In 2006, Campbell Creek got just 1,525 rainbows and Chester Creek received 325 -- about half the normal number.
Biologists are trying to maintain some fishing and protect small resident rainbow populations in both streams.
In Chester Creek, including University Lake, only unbaited artificial lures can be used. Ditto in Campbell Creek until the silver salmon fishery opens there July 25.
Any rainbow caught must be returned to the water unharmed.
