A minor fire caused more than $60,000 in damage Sunday afternoon at the VA outpatient clinic on DeBarr Road.
A steam humidifier in a sterilizing unit caught fire and was destroyed, but the sprinkler system kept the blaze and damage contained in a single second-floor room.
"This is definitely a sprinkler success story," said Anchorage Fire Department division chief Bridget Bushue.
She said the sprinklers put out the fire out before firefighters arrived at the clinic, which is next door to Alaska Regional Hospital. Had the sprinklers not worked, "the outcome would have been significantly different," Bushue said.
The fire started when a steam humidifier ignited for reasons still unknown, she said.
Only three employees were inside the clinic when a fire alarm went off, VA spokeswoman Marcia Hoffman-DeVoe said. No one was in the sterilizing unit at the time, she said.
The clinic will be open as usual today from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Hoffman-DeVoe said.
