A decision has been delayed on whether to list Cook Inlet's beluga whales as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.
Last year, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service proposed listing the white whales, whose numbers have declined and now stand at approximately 375 animals.
NOAA announced Monday that it will extend the final decision up to six months.
Agency researchers say they need the time to prepare a 2008 population abundance estimate.
A decision now is required before Oct. 20.
NOAA says it received approximately 180,000 responses during the public comment period. The majority of the comments supported listing the whales as endangered.
