JUNEAU -- Gov. Sarah Palin wants state employees to consider donating their used cell phones to a group that provides calling cards for soldiers serving overseas.
The Cell Phones for Soldiers project recycles cell phones in exchange for phone cards.
Each phone donated is good for one hour of talk time on the card.
The state Department of Administration says state cell phones that are no longer serviceable or in surplus will be donated to the project.
The project was founded by two teenagers from Massachusetts with $21 of their own money.
The nonprofit organization has since raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 400,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers overseas.
