POPULATION: 245 (2006)
LOCATION: Four miles southeast of the junction of the Salcha and Tanana rivers, 38 miles northwest of Big Delta on the Richardson Highway.
DESCRIPTION: A summer recreation site for Fairbanks residents. More than 75 percent of the nearly 500 homes are used only seasonally. The few year-round residents are non-Native. Recreational waterskiing, fishing and boating occur during summer months. Construction and other part-time seasonal work provides the only employment opportunities.
HISTORY: The lake was originally reported by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1909 as Salchaket Lake. It was later named for U.S. President Warren G. Harding, who visited Alaska just before his death in 1923.
