Flaming grease from a kitchen fire sent an Anchorage teen to the hospital with minor burns to his hand and caused about $50,000 in damage to a South Anchorage home, according to firefighters.
The fire broke out at the home off Arctic Boulevard at about 2:40 p.m. as the teen was cooking with oil, firefighters said. Flames quickly rose and spread to cabinets and the rest of the kitchen, spewing heavy smoke upstairs through the split-level home.
Firefighters arrived minutes later and tamed the blaze in about 10 minutes, the department said.
Most of the damage was to the kitchen, though upstairs rooms also suffered heat and smoke damage. The home will not be habitable until utilities were restored and salvage work completed.
