A fire in a Midtown duplex Friday afternoon caused about $100,000 in damage and injured some pets that were trapped inside, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.
The residents of the home were not there at the time of the fire, reported just after 4 p.m. Some of the animals -- a small dog and two cats -- were revived using a special oxygen mask before animal control officers took them, firefighters said.
A passer-by reported heavy smoke billowing out of the second story of the duplex located at 4014 Wright St., just south of Providence Alaska Medical Center. Police arriving on the scene made sure there was no one inside, then began evacuating a woman and her child from an adjoining unit.
Firefighters began attacking the blaze in a second-floor bedroom, where thick smoke and a collapsed ceiling impeded their efforts, firefighters said. Despite that, 12 units brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes after it had begun spreading to the next-door unit where the woman and her child had been.
The cause of the fire remained unknown Friday evening.
