Grass fire extinguished at Fort Richardson

Anchorage firefighters extinguished a small grass fire that began when a marker ball on a power line caught fire at about 11:30 a.m. today. The ball - meant to alert airplanes to the presence of the power line - apparently dripped hot plastic onto the ground, said Chugach Electric Association spokesman Phil Steyer.

The fire began on a frontage road not far from the National Guard Armory along the Glenn Highway. Firefighters put it out within minutes, said Fire Department spokesman Tom Kempton.

Steyer said it's not unheard of for marker balls to catch fire. He said he has seen it happen maybe three to five times in his 21 years with the power company.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.
