WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Deborah Bonito, the wife of Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, received one of the top volunteer honors recently in Washington from the Armed Services YMCA.
Bonito's Military and Family Support Initiative was honored with the Raytheon Program Achievement Award for Best Use of Volunteers.
Her initiative was one of three to receive the Raytheon awards at an Armed Services YMCA lunch in the Cannon House Office Building. The Armed Services YMCA is the nation's leading nonprofit organization to support the families of junior enlisted military personnel.
The Anchorage program aims to provide recreational opportunities for service members and their families and also conducts events aimed at thanking military men and women for their contributions to the nation.
The program also established a city Web site, www.muni.org/milfamilysupport, for civilians to donate their time, talent and money to organizations working to support military families in Alaska, and to ease the transition back home for service members.
