This year's citywide cleanup campaign ended with more than 3 million pounds of trash collected and hauled away by volunteers, according to the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the annual event.
"There was an increased level of participation this year, nearly all of the 60,000 bags we ordered were distributed, and schools from Eagle River to Whittier were involved in the massive effort," chamber president Stacy Schubert said in a prepared statement.
The Anchorage School District says 74 public schools were involved on Saturday, May 10, with students rewarded with Apple iPods for their effort.
All told, nearly 800 organizations and businesses signed up to clean up, and more than 5,000 cars and trucks took advantage of "free dump days" at landfills, according to the chamber.
This is the 40th year for the cleanup.
