ANCHOR POINT -- Firefighters continued to knock back a wildfire burning on the Kenai Peninsula on Thursday, getting the 260-acre Homestead fire 80 percent contained as they mopped up a 100-foot swath along its entire perimeter, according to the Alaska Division of Forestry.
Firefighters were on track to kill the blaze, burning between Ninilchik and Anchor Point about 2 1/2 miles east of the Sterling Highway, by the end of the week, said Andy Alexandrou, a spokesman for the forestry division.
Lower temperatures and some rain forecast for the area today looked to work in crews' favor, he said.
More than 90 people continued fighting the fire through the day Thursday, but that number would likely be reduced today, he said. Already, the aerial support had been called off.
Three cabins are close to the fire but were not threatened, Alexandrou said. One firefighter received a minor cut, but no other injuries were reported, he said.
Officials suspect the fire was caused by human activity and it remains under investigation.
