VALDEZ -- A former Valdez city councilman died on a Canadian highway this week when an oncoming driver swerved into his lane and forced his motorcycle off the road, according to the Valdez mayor.
Rich Nielsen, 62, died on the scene off the Alaska Highway near Beaver Creek -- just across the border in the Yukon territory -- after the accident late Tuesday, Mayor Bert Cottle said.
Nielsen, who served on the City Council for at least six years, was on his way to the Hyder Motorcycle Rally with a friend, said his daughter, Tina Nielsen. The driver who swerved told investigators she was trying to avoid an object in the road, Tina Nielsen said.
Rich Nielsen had recently retired from the oil industry and spent 21 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, she said.
A service is planned Wednesday at the Valdez civic center, Cottle said.
