QUINHAGAK -- A 2-year-old boy is dead after he fell into the Kanektok River and drowned while on a family picnic, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The boy, who was not immediately identified, was on a picnic with his parents about four miles upstream from Quinhagak on Sunday afternoon when he fell in while not wearing a flotation device, troopers said.
A troopers aircraft and local searchers scoured the area but were unable to locate the boy's body Sunday, despite searching into the night, troopers said. Recovery efforts were continuing Monday.
