SITKA -- Two people were rescued near Sitka on Tuesday morning after their fishing boat started taking on water.
The pair put out a call for help around 9 a.m. as their boat began to sink. The fishing vessel was taking on water and they were abandoning ship, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The man and the woman were wearing survival suits, Coast Guard Ensign Andrea Manuel said.
The U.S. Coast Guard launched a helicopter from Sitka and also broadcast a call for any boats in the area to help.
The crew of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research ship, the Rainier, responded and picked up the pair within minutes, Manuel said.
The NOAA ship was heading back to Sitka with the pair on board. Both were doing fine, she said.
The sinking occurred in southern Sitka Sound, about 17 nautical miles from Sitka, Manuel said. The boat went down fast. It's unclear what caused the trouble, she said.
