AMBLER -- Two backpackers who sent a distress beacon about 40 miles north of Ambler when one broke his foot Monday were rescued safely, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Michael Lett, 33, of Texas, and Matt Wilkins, 21, of Montana, were hiking through the Northwest Arctic Borough on their way to Ambler when Wilkins apparently broke his foot, troopers said.
Lett activated his beacon, which sent a signal to troopers in Kotzebue. After getting the coordinates, troopers contacted the Rescue Coordination Center in Anchorage, which dispatched the civil air patrol and an Alaska Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopter from Nome.
The civil air patrol found the men and dropped a radio to them so they could communicate with rescuers, troopers said.
The Black Hawk flew them to Kotzebue, where Wilkins was treated for his injury, troopers said.
