Fred Meyer is recalling ground beef because of a possible E. coli contamination.
Customers should carefully check recently purchased ground beef and to return it to the store for a refund or replacement if it is included under the recall, according to a news release from Kroger, the company that owns Fred Meyer and other grocery stores.
The recalled meat includes:
-- Private Selection Natural ground beef sold in 16-ounce packages in the self-service meat case, with "sell by" dates between July 11 and July 21.
-- Ground beef products in foam tray packages wrapped in clear cellophane or purchased from an in-store service counter with "sell by" dates between May 21 and July 5.
The Department of Agriculture informed Kroger that one of its suppliers, Nebraska Beef, has been linked to E.coli illnesses in Michigan and Ohio in late May and early June.
Ground beef sold in sealed tubes in 1-, 3- or 5-pound packages and frozen ground beef patties are not included in the recall.
