HEALY LAKE
POPULATION: 37 (2007)
LOCATION: On the course of the Healy River, 29 miles east of Delta Junction.
DESCRIPTION: A mixed Athabascan and non-Native community of about a dozen year-round households on 5-mile long Healy Lake. About three-quarters of the population is Alaska Native or part Native, most of whom lead a subsistence lifestyle. Recreational use of Healy Lake occurs during summer months, attracting Fairbanks residents. Access is by way of boat, on the Tanana River from Big Delta. There is no direct road access.
HISTORY: The local name was reported in 1914 by the U.S. Geological Survey. Due to declining enrollment, the school was closed in 1999.
