VALDEZ -- Three people trapped by glacial icebergs near Columbia Glacier on Sunday morning were towed to safety several hours later.
Three good Samaritan boats and the U.S. Coast Guard brought the 36-foot China Doll to Valdez Harbor early Sunday evening, several hours after the initial call for help came at 10:55 a.m., according to the Coast Guard.
The harbor master will tow the boat into its private slip this morning, the Coast Guard said. The three people were expected to spend the night aboard the boat.
Three private boats helped bring the boat and its occupants to safety, the Coast Guard said: The Tigger, which towed the China Doll out of the ice; the Clementine, which towed the China Doll to Heather Bay, and the Fox Island, which took the China Doll from Heather Bay to the harbor in Valdez.
The Coast Guard, which had dispatched the 110-foot cutter Long Island and a 25-foot response boat after receiving the call for help, took over when the China Doll reached Valdez Harbor.
No one was injured and the China Doll didn't appear to be damaged, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard couldn't immediately identify the China Doll's occupants.
