NOME -- An Alaska State Troopers aircraft that crashed about 50 miles northwest of Nome suffered substantial damage but its pilot was not injured, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The Piper PA-18 Supercub went down about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, officials said. The trooper pilot was the only person on board, the administration said.
Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said the aircraft was apparently travelling on Kougarok Road when its tire went into the soft shoulder and caused the aircraft to flip onto its top. The aircraft was being recovered Wednesday, and the amount of damage, called "significant," was still being assessed, she said.
