Captured bear cub

MARC LESTER / Anchorage Daily News

This male grizzly bear cub was captured by state wildlife officials near the Stuckagain Heights neighborhood where the cub's mother was killed. He is now housed in a display at the Alaska Zoo.

Remaining bear cub still eludes biologists

Attempts to capture a brown bear cub orphaned when biologists shot its mother this week were unsuccessful Thursday afternoon, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

The cub's sibling was taken into custody Tuesday, the day the sow was shot in a Stuckagain Heights yard on suspicion that it had mauled at least one person and chased several others in Far North Bicentennial Park.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game spokesman Bruce Bartley said biologists were upping their efforts to capture the remaining cub and were sitting at the site of its mother's death in the hopes they would get a clean shot with a dart gun. Officials were also thinking of increasing the dose to knock the bear out before it can escape into the woods, he said.

The cub's brother was taken safely to the Anchorage Zoo. Both will be sent to a Midwest zoo if the second one is captured, he said.
