LOCATION: On the left bank of the Nushagak River, 65 miles northeast of Dillingham.
DESCRIPTION: A Yup'ik Eskimo village with Russian Orthodox practices. Seven of every eight residents are Alaska Native or part Native, and subsistence activities play an important part in the lifestyle and economy. The school, attended by about 75 students, and village organization provide most year-round jobs. Many residents trap, and about 20 hold commercial fishing permits.
HISTORY: Koliganek was first listed in the 1880 Census as "Kalignak." The name is local, recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1930. Since that time, the village has moved four miles downstream from the original site.
