A former Anchorage schoolteacher convicted of molesting a child in Washington has been sentenced to more than four years in prison, according to Snohomish County prosecutors.

Alex Mayo, 32, pleaded the equivalent to no contest to a felony count of sexually molesting a minor that could have brought him life in prison, said deputy prosecuting attorney Laura Twitchell. As part of the deal, he got 51 months in prison and had three counts reduced to one for contacts with a 9-year-old boy.

Mayo was teaching grade school at Rilke Schule German charter school until the Anchorage School District learned of the Washington charges in December and suspended him. A former teacher at Muldoon Elementary, North Star Elementary and Village Charter School, Mayo subsequently resigned June 12, said district spokeswoman Heidi Embley.

There was no indication inappropriate conduct took place in Anchorage schools, officials have said.

But he was recently charged by Alaska with molesting a child here. Mayo's lawyer brokered a deal with Alaska prosecutors to drop the charges against him here as part of the Washington plea, Twitchell said. Alaska prosecutors did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the deal.

Mayo agreed to stop teaching and will serve his time in the Washington prison system, where he will also undergo court-ordered treatment, Twitchell said.
