LOCATION: On a 35-foot bluff on the west bank of the Yukon River, at the base of the Nulato Hills, west of the Innoko National Wildlife Refuge and 335 miles west of Fairbanks.
DESCRIPTION: A Koyukon Athabascan village where nearly 90 percent of the population is Alaska Native. The Stick Dance Festival draws visitors from many neighboring villages. Subsistence is a key part of the local economy. Most cash jobs come through the tribe, school (about 50 students), local government, BLM firefighting, commercial fishing or fish processing.
HISTORY: Kaltag is located in Koyukon Athabascan territory and was used as a cemetery for surrounding villages.
