LOCATION: Just north of Haines, near Chilkoot Inlet and Chilkoot Lake.
DESCRIPTION: More a development in the greater Haines area than a clearly defined community. About 9 in 10 residents are non-Native. Residents are employed in Haines in a variety of businesses and government services. During the 2000 U.S. Census, 15 of the 39 homes were occupied only seasonally.
HISTORY: The Tlingit Indian name Lutak was first published in 1923. Haines, historically Chilkat Indian territory, is now predominantly a non-Native community. There are two Chilkat Indian villages in the area, the Chilkoot, in Haines, and the Chilkat, in Klukwan.
