Bethel police shot and killed a man who they say pointed a rifle at them Friday night, according to Alaska State Troopers.Bethel resident Evan E. Williams Jr., 34, died following the shooting, said troopers, who were called to investigate the incident at about 10:40 p.m. Friday.
Police told them officers were responding to a report of a distraught man with a gun on Ptarmigan Road. When officers arrived, the man, later identified as Williams, stepped onto the porch brandishing a rifle, troopers said.
Police ordered him to drop the weapon, but Williams instead pointed it at the officers, who opened fire and took him down, troopers said. Williams was transported to the Bethel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Troopers say alcohol was a factor.
