BETHE -- Bethel police shot and killed a man who they say pointed a rifle at them Friday night, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Bethel resident Evan E. Williams Jr., 34, died following the shooting, said troopers, who were called to investigate the shooting at about 10:40 p.m. Friday.
Police told them officers were responding to a report of a distraught man with a gun on Ptarmigan Road. Upon arriving on the scene, the man, later identified as Williams, stepped onto the porch brandishing a rifle, troopers said.
Police ordered him to drop the weapon, but Williams instead pointed it at the officers, who opened fire, troopers said. Williams was transported to the Bethel Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Troopers say alcohol was a factor in the shooting.
A dispatcher who answered the phone for Bethel police on Sunday said no one could comment on the shooting and directed questions to troopers. Trooper Henry Ching, officer in charge at the Bethel post, said he could not comment on the case.
