JUNEAU -- An injured Sri Lankan man was plucked from a ship 225 miles southeast of Kodiak and safely medevacked to the town for treatment, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday.
The Coast Guard received a request Saturday morning to lift the unidentified man from the Santiago, a 572-foot Marshall Islands-flagged vessel.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and an HC-130 aircraft were deployed from Kodiak but at first could not spot the ship because of poor visibility and weather conditions, the Coast Guard said.
The rescuers found it on their second pass and lowered a rescue swimmer onto the vessel to prepare the man to be hoisted. The chopper crew got him aboard the helicopter at about 5:30 p.m. It arrived in Kodiak about two hours later.
The nature of the man's injuries was not released, but he was listed in stable condition at Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center, the Coast Guard said.
