HOMER - Mayor James Hornaday quit Tuesday, but his resignation came too late for him to withdraw from his re-election campaign.
City Clerk Jo Johnson says if Hornaday wins in November, he would be mayor again and have to resign again if he didn't want the job. Then, a special election would have to be held to select a replacement.
City Councilman Mike Heimbuch is running for mayor but not assuming he'll win just because Hornaday quit.
In his resignation letter Hornaday said only that the time had come, adding "Happy trails to all."
Mayor Pro Tem Dennis Novak will preside over Monday's council meeting. Next month the council will need to appoint an interim mayor.
