HEALY
POPULATION: 1,027 (2007)
LOCATION: At the mouth of Healy Creek on the Nenana River, just north of the entrance to Denali National Park and Preserve on the George Parks Highway, 78 miles southwest of Fairbanks.
DESCRIPTION: A coal mining town that has evolved into an economically diverse community. The Usibelli Coal Mine, employing about 145, has dominated the local economy for more than 50 years. It produces about 1.5 million tons of coal per year. Tourism at nearby Denali Park supports RV parks, guided rafting trips, helicopter tours and other retail trade and services.
HISTORY: Healy was developed in 1918 by the Usibelli Coal Mine, Alaska's largest coal mining operation, supplying coal to Golden Valley Electric, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the military and South Korea.
