DILLINGHAM -- A 74-foot tugboat pushing an empty oil barge was damaged after it ran up on a rock along Wood River about 14 miles north of Dillingham.
The Tuesday morning accident left an 18 inch by 3 inch gash in the hull of the Crowley tug called the Twi-Lite. The barge was not damaged.
The crew patched the hole with plywood and spare life vests, and Crowley representatives are working with the Coast Guard on a salvage plan. They hope to refloat the tug when an assist tug arrives on scene Friday.
A Coast Guard team from Anchorage is on its way to assess the damage.
No pollution has been reported.
