Police spokesman Lt. Paul Honeman retired from the force Friday and announced his intent to run for mayor in the spring municipal election.
Honeman, a 22-year-veteran of the force, said he plans to file his intent to run with the Alaska Public Offices Commission on Monday.
Current Mayor Mark Begich is competing for Sen. Ted Stevens' seat in Congress in the November election, but whatever the result, he can't run for mayor again because of term limits. That has prompted a growing list of local officials to express interest in vying for the job.
They include Assembly members Sheila Selkregg and Matt Claman, former Assemblyman Dan Sullivan and former Anchorage Rep. Eric Croft.
Honeman has been the police spokesman for the past three years. Taking over the helm of APD's public affairs department is Lt. David Parker, 57, the recent commander of the special victims, crimes against children and cyber crime units.
