Volunteer crews will be clearing moose-attracting brush alongside the Seward Highway in South Anchorage today, and the work will continue through Wednesday.
It's an effort to cut down on dangerous collisions between moose and vehicles, said Gary Olson, chairman of the Alaska Moose Federation, which is organizing the effort.
Crews will be focusing on the west side of the highway between Dimond Boulevard and O'Malley Road, an area especially dense with moose browse, Olson said.
"The moose are actually camping out right inside that fence line," he said. "They are getting in from the ends but there are also gaps in the fence."
Volunteers are already lined up to run chain saws and chippers, but anyone is welcome to show up if they want to help clear away brush, he said. Parking is available at the ball fields at Old Seward and O'Malley, he said.
In addition to the moose federation, agencies helping with the effort include: the state Department of Transportation, the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Fish and Game, the Alaska Highway Safety Office, and SAGA, which is associated with the AmeriCorps program.
The work is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
