MCKINLEY PARK
POPULATION: 149 (2007)
LOCATION: On the George Parks Highway near the entrance to Denali National Park and Preserve.
DESCRIPTION: Primarily a seasonal community. A few live there year-round, but during summer the population balloons to serve visitors to Denali National Park and other tourists. Denali is open all year, but bus service within the park is available only from late May to mid-September. Most visitor services at McKinley Park are closed in winter.
HISTORY: The Parks Highway opened in 1972, and the community has developed since then around National Park Service employment and tourism-related facilities such as lodges, restaurants and rafting outfitters.
