CLAM GULCH
POPULATION: 175 (2007)
LOCATION: On the Sterling Highway, 24 miles south of the city of Kenai, on the Kenai Peninsula.
DESCRIPTION: An unincorporated roadside development and geographic location more than a defined community. Many residents' jobs are in Kenai and its environs. About 30 residents hold commercial fishing permits. The area is a popular clamming destination. A 2 percent sales tax is levied by the Kenai Peninsula Borough. During the 2000 U.S. Census, there were 115 houses, 41 of them used only seasonally.
HISTORY: The area was reported in 1947 by Barnes and Cobb of the U.S. Geological Survey and named after the Clam Gulch ravine. The post office was set up in 1950.
