Grant money available to help young Natives

The First Alaskans Institute is seeking applicants for grants of $20,000 to $50,000 for projects that can better prepare preschool Native children for success in school or that promote youth leadership development and cultural learning.

Applicants must be tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations or federally recognized Alaska Native tribal organizations, or must have shown evidence of a collaborative community effort serving an Alaska Native community.

The institute said it has $300,000 total available for projects that will take place in 2009. Six to 15 grants will be awarded. For more information, go to www.firstalaskans.org and click on the "Community Investment" tab, call 677-1700 or e-mail Jenel Franklin at jenelfranklin@firstalaskans.org.
